MEET THE SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES

Robyn  Axberg

I am mom to 3 QR students – 2nd grade triplets.  As they prepare for their First Holy Communion, I am mindful of the critical role their QR catholic education holds in their lives (and ours).  This is our first year in the community, and I am grateful for the efforts of so many of the staff and volunteers and other parents and parishioners in helping to make us feel welcome and part of the community.  Joining an active and vibrant parish and school is important to my family and was a factor in helping us select our home and community.  As we have been the beneficiary of the efforts of so many (from inviting us to holiday gatherings, to giving us used uniforms and providing babysitter referrals, to putting a sign in our yard before the first day of school, to volunteering to spend time with my kids for art projects and lunch monitoring and extra reading help during the school day, to putting on the spectacular event that was the gala… so many ways, big and small), I have been looking for the right opportunity to give back.

My background and experience could prove valuable to the Board.  As an attorney, I would be able to review legal contracts on behalf of the school board (for example, the food truck agreement).  I also have reviewed and drafted many organizational documents (like bylaws, conflicts of interest policies, etc) for paying clients, for pro bono clients, and for organizations with which I have been involved as a volunteer.  I have attended many board meetings (for for-profit companies and not-for-profit entities) and have organized and run such meetings as well.  I previously served as secretary on the school board at my kids’ prior school (St. Bartholomew in Chicago).  Before my professional life as an attorney (and while attending law school at night), I worked in finance and have a fair understanding of financial statements and budgeting considerations (and decent spreadsheet skills) that may also be helpful to the board.  My work often involves highly sensitive matters and I am used to honoring confidentiality obligations for my clients and organizations.  I have no personal agenda here (other than giving back to the community and helping QR remain a vibrant and active home away from home), so I do not foresee any issues arising in that regard.

Fred Henning

I was born in Chicago in 1938, attended St Rita and St Kevin grammar schools, Mendel Catholic H.S. and entered the Augustinian Seminary after H.S. After leaving the seminary, I attended Loyola University working full time while attending day and night school classes and earned a Bachelor’s degree. I also received a Masters degree in Public Administration from Roosevelt University.

I have held electronic engineering positions at a number of companies, I was a lecturer at the Adler Planetarium for 12 years and while there developed and presented courses in Methods of Teaching Astronomy for elementary and High School and developed a coordinated curriculum guide for the Chicago Public Schools. I was the initial director of the Planetarium Society’s Astro-Science Workshops. This was a federally funded program to interest elementary and H.S. students in Astronomy and Space. Subsequent to this I was engaged by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to present special programs at Colleges/Universities showing teachers, in various disciplines, how astronomy and space topics could be introduced into their curriculum.  I also taught electronics and digital computer programming at Thornton JC for 4 years and Fire Science at Harper College for 12 years.

I have been part of the Elk Grove Community since the mid 60’s, working as an engineer for Ampex in the Industrial Park, becoming a full time member of the Elk Grove Fire Department in 1970, working part time and then full time at Alexian Brothers Medical Center until retiring in 2012.

I married and had 7 children that attended St Hubert and/or Our Lady of the Wayside grammar schools and St Viator H.S. I was a member of the St Hubert school board. Five of the children also chose to attend Catholic Universities. I am presently married to Mary Ann Gibson-Keegan, who has been very active at QR and her children attended Queen of the Rosary.

School Board:

I have always been an exponent of Catholic Education and pledge to be an active participant not only at school board meetings but in the life of the school and students. I have already been active with the school having been a judge at the annual Science Fair and having built much of the equipment in the Kg/pre-school educational play area. I offer my time and life experience to help the school in any way that I can.

Jonathan Oddo Jonathan Oddo was born on November 1, 1982, and grew up in Mt. Prospect, Ill.  Jonathan attended Our Lady of Wayside Grammar school and graduated high school from St. Viator’s in 2001. Jonathan went on to attend college at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he meet his wife, Laurie. They have two children Sophie (5) and Chloe (3) who will both be students at Queen of the Rosary in the Fall of 2019 by choice, because they believe that Queen of the Rosary will provide an excellent learning environment and education. Jonathan is currently a Project Manager at Walgreens and believes that his Catholic education and strong family values are keys to his success.

Why I believe I am the best candidate to serve on the School Board:

As a father, uncle and friend of families and students who attend Queen of the Rosary, I would like to help my family at home and at QR continue to grow and thrive. I would like to take this opportunity to become involved in this amazing and unique school by serving on the school board. My experience as a project manager has prepared me to make impactful decisions and understand the value of considering the big picture without pushing any personal agendas. The opportunity to share my experience in the hospitality industry and marketing skills to help secure and maintain community and regional support and involvement would be an honor. I look forward to the opportunity to serve on the Queen of the Rosary school board to help QR continue to provide excellent education for our children by making good, solid decisions and policies to ensure quality education for all.

Thank you to the Queen of the Rosary administrators, teachers, and staff who make all of the difference in each child that passes through the doors of QR.
